| 31/07/2010 | Only one notable Yorkshire result at Goodwood today, but it's certainly a good one with David Nicholls yet again landing the £62,310 Stewards' Cup Heritage Handicap, this time with Evens And Odds, who was second in the race last season when trained by Kevin Ryan. Richard Fahey won the main race at Doncaster with Tepmokea whilst at Thirsk there are local winners for Fahey and David O'Meara. Meanwhile over in France there were two Mark Johnston runners in the Prix de Psyche G3 at Deauville with Bikini Babe finishing well to be second but Marie de Medici could only manage fifth. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 30/07/2010 | Another treble for the
Yorkshire trainers at Goodwood today with David
Nicholls' Joseph Henry starting the ball rolling
when taking the £18,693 Stewards' Sprint, with
stablemate Victoire de Lyphar back in second. The next
was the £93,465 totesport Mile Heritage Handicap and
this saw yet another valuable win for Mark
Johnston's Sea Lord, with Nigel
Tinkler's bottom weight Webbow hanging on for
third place. The last saw a Yorkshire one-two with Kevin
Ryan's Perfect Blossom triumphing over Tim
Easterby's Confessional. It emerged that Robin
Bastiman's Borderlescott was injured whilst
winning yesterday and thus it seems like a good time to
update the 'All Time Yorkshire Trained Winningmost
Chart', shown below, in which Borderlescott has leapt
ahead of Yavana's Pace (and is only just behind Somnus)
and Jukebox Jury has broken into the top 10 (pushing
Bandari out) since the last time I shared the list. Johnston
also had winners at Thirsk and Bath, whilst Tom
Walford had a winner at Bangor and Ruth
Carr landed a double at Haydock.

| 29/07/2010 | That's more like it ! Three winners at Goodwood today when Robin Bastiman's Borderlescott returns to form to land the King George Stakes G2, Mark Johnston's Eastern Aria lands her first group race when taking the Lillie Langtry Stakes G3 and David Nicholls' Hamoody rounds out the day by leading home a Yorkshire 1-2-3 in the closing handicap ahead of Kevin Ryan's Bajan Tryst and Nicholls' Crimea. Evening racing at Musselburgh sees winners for Linda Stubbs, Paul Midgley and Richard Whitaker. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 28/07/2010 | Again a couple of good placing at Goodwood with Mark Johnston's Stentorian leading the way when second in the Vintage Stakes G2, albeit six lengths behind the winner, whilst stablemate Qenaa was second in the maiden and Lady Eclair fourth in the opener off top weight. There are Redcar winners for David Barron, Mark Johnston, David Nicholls and Geoff Harker. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 27/07/2010 | Day One of Glorious Goodwood and it's a reasonably good start for the Tyke raiders with Richard Fahey's Changing The Guard a good second in the opening £31,155 Betfair App For iPhone Handicap and Kevin Ryan's Choose Wisely third in thr Molecomb Stakes G3, only a neck and a head behind the winner, with Richard Fahey's Mayson further back in fourth. There are winners at Beverley for Mark Johnston, Alan Swinbank, Ruth Carr, Richard Fahey and Tim Easterby whilst evening racing sees a winner at Worcester for Sue Smith and at Perth for Ferdy Murphy. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 25/07/2010 | Finally a Yorkshire trained Group One winner for the first time this year when the Mark Johnston trained Lady Jane Digby lands the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis Bayerisches Zuchtrennen G1 at Munich by a length, under an excellent ride from Greg Fairley ; his first ever Group One winner. With Kirsten Rausing as the owner and Johnston as the trainer it's a typically ambitious program from now on with the Arlington Million and EP Taylor Stakes both on the horizon for the daughter of Oasis Dream. Johnston also had a double at Ascot with Malthouse landing the opening maiden (usually a strong race) and Bay Willow adding to his valuable Curragh winnings when taking the £20,251 Rendezvous Casino Handicap, the Ebor is a possible destination for this son of Singspiel. Still at Ascot Brian Ellison had a winner and Kevin Ryan's Masamah took the £20,251 JRA Sprint Handicap. At Pontefract there were winners for John Quinn (a double), Tim Walford, Alan Swinbank and Mark Johnston whilst Richard Fahey's Harrison George was third in the Pomfret Stakes L, with David Barron's Sirvino back in fourth. Carlisle saw more winners for Brian Ellison (his second prestigious ladies race win in as many days) and Alan Swinbank as well as for Richard Fahey and John Weymes. Typically the Kingsley House team is coming right into form at exactly the correct time ; should be an excellent Glorious Goodwood, although don't expect regular updates from me mid-week as I will be out on my travels. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 24/07/2010 | An excellent 'King George' day at Ascot for the Tykes with Brian Ellison's Rosko landing the opener, Bryan Smart's Don't Call Me taking the £20,251 Dubai Duty Free and Richard Fahey's Castles In The Air putting up an excellent performance to secure the £47,732 Victoria Racing Club International Heritage Handicap, in addition Fahey's Premier Clarets was third in the Winkfield Stakes L and Tim Easterby's Imperialistic Diva was fourth in the Princess Margaret Stakes G3. At York Fahey's Kaldoun Kingdom could 'only' manage second, off top weight, in the £32,380 Sky Bet Dash, with Kevin Ryan's Parisian Pyramid in third ahead of stablemate Tiddliwinks, Fahey won the maiden whilst David O'Meara's flying start as a trainer continued when he took the last. Ruth Carr had a winner at Newmarket whilst Newcastle saw yet another winner for Fahey as well as for Alan Swinbank, Mark Johnston (a double) and Richard Whitaker. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 19/07/2010 | Up at Ayr this afternoon Tim Easterby's Favourite Girl lands the £21,370 Bet At Victor Chandler On 08000 787878 Handicap (lovely snappy race name), further winners on the card come from Richard Fahey, Ruth Carr and David Nicholls. Evening racing at Beverley sees winners for Kevin Ryan, Mark Johnston, Mel Brittain (a double), Ian McInnes and Tim Easterby. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 18/07/2010 | Mark Johnston's second attempt at a German Group One ends poorly with Monterosso out of the places in the Deutsches Derby G1 at Hamburg, a little rest now and then the Great Voltigeur and the St. Leger, surely ......... ? At the Curragh Kevin Ryan's Bajan Tryst was a decent third in the Rockingham Handicap whilst domestically there were winners for Alan Brown and Linda Stubbs. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 17/07/2010 | Mark Johnston's Jukebox Jury could only manage fourth today in the Grosser Preis Von Lotto G1 at Hamburg, the good news is that he was only two heads out of second place, the bad news is that former Kingsley House inmate Campanologist was the clear winner. On home soil the results were better with David Nicholls' Regal Parade (another ex-Johnston horse) landing the Shadwell Stud Hackwood Stakes G3 at Newbury in good style, only Yorkshires sixth group win of the season, whilst in the Weatherbys Super Sprint Yorkshire trained horses occupied second, third and fourth with Kevin Ryan's Bold Bidder picking up £41,860 by finishing second ahead of Bryan Smart's Move In Time and Tim Easterby's Mappin Time. Tom Tate's Distant Memories was also a good second in the Steventon Stakes L. At Newmarket Mark Johnston's Eastern Aria ran her best race of the season thus far to win the Plantation Stud Aphrodite Stakes L, whilst Linda Stubbs won the last. At Ripon there was a fantastic treble for Tim Easterby whilst Ruth Carr and Bryan Smart also had winners, meanwhile there were hurdling winners at Market Rasen for Ben Haslam and Alan Swinbank. Eveing racing at Haydock sees winners for Richard Fahey and Tom Tate. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 16/07/2010 | Result of the day today came at Hamilton's evening meeting where Mark Johnston's bottom weighted Lowdown landed the £20,562 Scottish Stewards Cup Handicap with Richard Whitaker's Damika, Tim Easterby's The Nifty Fox and David Nicholls' Tajneed occupying the minor placings. There were other winners at Hamilton for Ian McInnes, Richard Fahey, Tim Easterby and Alan Swinbank whilst the evening meeting at Pontefract saw wins for David Brown, Neville Bycroft, Mark Johnston and Ruth Carr and Mark Johnston had a winner at Newmarket's corresponding meeting. Earlier in the day Richard Fahey's Sir Reginald was a good third in the Rose Bowl Stakes L at Newbury, where Mark Johnston had a win later on the card, whilst Alan Swinbank won the opener at Haydock. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 10/07/2010 | After an excellent week today was a bit of a let down with lots of good placings in the major races, but no wins. At York Tom Tate's Kings Gambit picked up £28,905 when finishing second in the John Smith's Cup Heritage Handicap beaten only a short head with Richard Fahey's Demolition in third. Tim Easterby's Deauville Flyer was third in the John Smith's Silver Cup Handicap L whilst there were winners in the supporting races at the Knavesmire for Mark Johnston and Geoff Oldroyd. It was a similar story at Chester with a Yorkshire 2-3-4 in the City Wall Stakes L with Tim Easterby's Captain Dunne beaten only a short head into second followed by Robin Bastiman's Borderlescott and Kevin Ryan's Masamah. There were no winners from a handful of runners at Nottingham whilst Mark Johnston provided the sole Yorkshire trained winner at Ascot. Evening racing at Hamilton sees a double for Bryan Smart as well as winners for Paul Midgley and Linda Stubbs. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Richard Fahey was on form at York with a winner in the opener followed by an excellent victory for Rose Blossom in the Summer Stakes G3, Declan Carroll's runner won the last. Evening racing at Chester sees winners for Richard Whitaker and Kevin Ryan at Chester and for Mark Johnston at Chepstow.
| 08/07/2010 | Slightly better today at Newmarket with Mark Johnston's ultra-progressive Corsica smartly landing the Bahrain Trophy G3 and James Bethell's Arlequin a good third, beaten a neck and a short head, in the sportingbet.com Heritage Handicap. Richard Fahey and Edwin Tuer both had winners at Doncaster's evening meeting. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 07/07/2010 | Mark Johnston's Rainfall, hotly tipped in many of the morning papers, could 'only' manage third in the Falmouth Stakes G1 on the opening day of Newmarket's July meeting. There were no winners down at HQ but in the equally glitzy surroundings of Catterick there were winners for Tim Easterby and Ruth Carr. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Domestically there was another black type performance at Haydock with Mark Johnston's Lady Jane Digby third in the Lancashire Oaks G2, ahead of Kevin Ryan's Les Fazzani in fourth. Richard Fahey's Demolition picked up £16,794 for second in the Old Newton Cup Heritage Handicap whilst Tim Easterby and Mark Johnston won the last two on Merseyside. Tim Easterby and David Barron had winners at Leicester whilst Tim Etherington waited until the last to provide the sole local winner at Beverley. Evening racing at Carlisle sees winners for Ann Duffield, Mark Johnston, Tim Easterby and Chris Thornton whilst Tim Walford lands the last at Nottingham.
| 02/07/2010 | The second day of July and another black type performance with Richard Fahey's Jamesway third in the Dragon Stakes L at Sandown. John Weymes and Tim Easterby provide the local winners at Doncaster, with the later having earlier taken the opener at Warwick. Evening racing at Beverley sees winners for Richard Fahey, Bryan Smart, Brian Ellison and Ruth Carr whilst Haydock's evening card yields winners for Ann Duffield, Richard Fahey and David Nicholls. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 01/07/2010 | July sees Mark Johnston send the once raced Stentorian to Leopardstown for the Golden Fleece Stakes L, in which he finishes second. Johnston also had a double at Haydock and a winner at Epsom's evening meeting, where David Nicholls also had a winner. Johnston was also amongst the winners closer to home at Redcar, with the other local victories coming courtesy of Geoff Harker, Richard Fahey (a double), Bryan Smart and Micky Hammond. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 27/06/2010 | A valuable big-handicap double for Mark Johnston today at the Curragh, although the primary target saw Monterosso 'only' manage fourth in the Irish Derby G1, a faintly disappointing show. The Kingsley House Curragh winners were Sea Lord in the £35,951 Dubai Duty Free Double Millionaire Handicap and Bay Willow in the £43,141 Dubai Tennis Championship EBF Handicap. Domestically the only winner came from Kate Walton at Uttoxeter. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 26/06/2010 | Another busy midsummer Saturday and the main race is the Northumberland Plate up at Newcastle which sees no joy for the Yorkshire runners although Yorkshire stables win three of the last four races on the card courtesy of Kevin Ryan, Richard Fahey and Brian Ellison, the later with Camerooney, turning out again only three days after his win at Carlisle. The other main meeting is at Newmarket where there are no winners although Kevin Ryan's Shoshoni Wind is second and Tim Easterby's Imperialistic Diva third in the Empress Stakes L and David Brown's Doncaster Rover is third in the Criterion Stakes G3. Evening racing at Kempton sees winners for Ann Duffield and Mark Johnston. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 19/06/2010 | No joy on the final day of Royal Ascot 2010 with the best Yorkshire performance coming from Dandy Nicholls' bottom weight Striking Spirit, second in the Wokingham Handicap. Although there was a Yorkshire winner up at Ayr courtesy of Richard Fahey again the best performance came from a Dandy Nicholls' runner-up with City Dancer a good second in the Land O'Burns Fillies' Stakes L. On home turf at Redcar there were wins for Linda Stubbs, David Nicholls, Nigel Tinkler and Jedd O'Keeffe. Yorkshire trained horses won the first four races at Haydock's evening meeting thanks to Richard Fahey, Jedd O'Keeffe, David Barron and Alan Swinbank. Meanwhile in Middleham 'Little Spigot', part of Karl Burke's empire on the opposite side of the road to Spigot Lodge, is for sale via Savills with two cottages, a flat, 33 boxes and an indoor school for £795,000. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 18/06/2010 | Another good day at Royal Ascot for Mark Johnston when Monterosso puts up a convincing performance to land the King Edward VII Stakes G2. Later on the card Tom Tate's Kings Gambit is second in the Wolferton Handicap L whilst Johnston's Corscia was a faintly disappointing fourth in the Queen's Vase G3. Evening racing at Ayr sees winners for Tom Tate, Brian Ellison and Alan Swinbank. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| 16/06/2010 | Day Two of Royal Ascot and Mark Johnston's progressive Rainfall holds on to land the Jersey Stakes G3 by a head, she has a good book of entries including the Falmouth Stakes G1. Three races later stablemate St Moritz is third in the Royal Hunt Cup whilst Geoff Oldroyd's Ladies Are Forever (homebred by Reg Bond of Yapham Mill Stud) is an excellent third, beaten two necks, in the Queen Mary Stakes G3 to give the Bond/Oldroyd team another good filly to go along with Lady Royale. | 12/06/2010 | A good day for the locals at York with pide of place going to David Nicholls' Victoire de Lyphar who landed the £64,760 Reg Griffin Memorial Trophy Heritage Handicap, with Robin Bastiman's Singeur back in third. Other local winners on the card were provided by Tom Tate (Distant Memories in the £17,485 ladbrokes.com Handicap) and Richard Fahey. There was an equally good showing in Sandown's main race of the day when Tim Etherington's Burning Thread (owned by the trainer) landed the Totesport.com Scurry Stakes L from John Weymes' Reignier. This is an excellent result for Etherington who has enjoyed a resurgence in recent seasons primarily thanks to Fullandby, but Burning Thread now seems to be another horse for him to compete in the big sprint races with. Up at Hexham there are winners for Micky Hammond and Alan Swinbank. Evening racing at Leicester sees a winner for Kevin Ryan. It has been announced that Anthony Gillam died last Sunday aged 62. Gillam was the grandson of Lionel Holliday and bought Wheatlands Farm on the Copgrove estate from his cousin Brook Holliday from where he started training, and also ran a stud. | 05/06/2010 | No joy until the last at Epsom today, although Richard Fahey's Premier Clarets was a promising third in the Woodcote Stakes L. The Derby winner was Workforce, last seen out when second in the Dante Stakes at York (picture below). The last race on the Downs however saw a Thirsk 1-2-3 with David Barron's Flipando coming home in front in the £12,462 Investec Distinctive Handicap ahead of the Dandy Nicholls' pair of Fol Hollow and Something. The opener was the Achilles Stakes L and here Richard Fahey's Rose Blossom was a good second. The next was the Sandy Lane Stakes L which saw Mark Johnston's appropriately named Rainfall finish second ahead of David Nicholls' Mister Manannan back in third. Kevin Ryan's Les Fazzani provided the sole winner when landing the EBF Joan Westbrook Pinnacle Stakes L whilst David Brown's Doncaster Rover was an excellent second in the day's only group race, the John of Gaunt Stakes G3. The locals dominated at Catterick taking all but one of the races thanks to wins for Brian Ellison, David Barron, Ruth Carr, Mark Johnston, Tim Easterby and Ann Duffield whilst at Beverley there were wins for Geoff Oldroyd, Paul Midgley, Bryan Smart and Ruth Carr. Ollie Pears provided the only Yorkshire winner over at Haydock but Robin Bastiman's Borderlescott was third in the Temple Stakes G2 and Mark Johnston's Al Farahidi a good second in the £46,732 Silver Bowl Heritage Handicap. | 16/05/2010 | Kevin Ryan's Benbaun put up a strong performance at Longchamp this afternoon to be second, beaten only a head, in the Prix de Saint-Georges G3. Domestically there are local winners at Ripon for Tom Tate, Richard Fahey, Nigel Tinkler and Tim Easterby whilst Malcolm Jefferson's runner lands the opener at Market Rasen. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Bryan Smart won the opener. Newcastle's evening meeting meanwhile saw winners for Kevin Ryan, Ruth Carr and Richard Whitaker whilst George Moore had a winner at Aintree.
| 13/05/2010 | Day two of York, and your
faithful correspondent was in attendance. Again no joy in
the major races but wins for Richard Fahey (a
double) and Micky Hammond plus Tom
Tate's Balcarce Nov was third in the Hambleton
Handicap L . Nice to see two excellent
fillies in dual-Oaks winner Sariska (who of course has a
vague Yorkshire connection via the Bishop
Wilton Stud who bred her
dam) and Breeders' Cup winner Midday who were
respectively first and second in the Middleton Stakes G2
whilst the Dante G2, as usual, produced
a leading fancy for the Derby in the form of Cape Blanco
although connections seemed concerned immediately after
the race and it now transpires that he has slightly
damaged his heel. Less impressive was the three sets of
rails which now separate the punter from the course in
front of the stand making photography of the action much
harder. In the, admittedly unlikely, event that you only
want to go to York to take action photos I would
recommend parking in the car park, not paying to enter
and snap away in the home straight, take a packed lunch !
Click on the photos below for slightly higher quality
versions. |

| 03/05/2010 | Typical low quality Bank Holiday fayre today, but the Yorkshire trainers continued their good run; winning all the races at the local meeting at Beverley thanks to David Brown (a double), Mick Easterby, John Quinn, Kevin Ryan and Ian McInnes. At Warwick there were winners for Declan Carroll and Kevin Ryan whilst over in Ireland, where the quality of racing was noticably higher, Mark Johnston's Hacienda put up an eye-catching performance to be fourth in the Tetrarch Stakes G3. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 02/05/2010 | It may have been a controversial 1,000 Guineas but it was another good day at HQ for the Yorkshire trainers with the emphasis switching to the fillies with Alan Swinbank's Honimiere second in the Dahlia Stakes G3 and Mark Johnston's Oaks entry Marie de Medici winning the Pretty Polly Stakes L. Up in Scotland it was also a good day for the Yorkshire raiders at Hamilton where they landed every race on the card courtesty of Kevin Ryan, Tim Easterby (a double), Richard Fahey, Mark Johnston, Linda Stubbs and Geoff Harker. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 01/05/2010 | Proceedings started in the best possible way for Mark Johnston at Newmarket today withTartan Gigha landing the £31,155 Suffolk Handicap and Jukebox Jury taking the Jockey Club Stakes G2 by nearly four lengths. Unfortunately Johnston's Awzaan flopped in the 2,000 Guineas but this shouldn't be allowed to detract from what was overall a good day for the Middleham based Scot. Later on at HQ Robin Bastiman's flag bearer Borderlescott ran an excellent seasonal debut to be second in the Palace House Stakes G3, one place better than he managed in the same race last season. At Goodwood Mark Johnston's Hafawa put up a good effort to be second in the EBF Conqueror Stakes L whilst at Uttoxter Sue Smith's Auroras Encore put up a surprisingly good performance to take the £28,505 Totepool Handicap Chase L. Closer to home there were winners at Thirsk for Mark Johnston, David Nicholls, Richard Fahey, Geoff Harker and Tim Easterby although unfortunately the Thirsk Hunt Cup went 'abroad'. Evening racing meanwhile sees a winner for Richard Whitaker at Doncaster and for Sue Smith at Hexham. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 27/04/2010 | Dandy Nicholls' Mister Manannann lands the Prix Sigy L at Chantilly by two lengths today, an excellent seasonal debut. Wins at Sedgefield for Ferdy Murphy, Kate Walton and Alan Swinbank runners. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 25/04/2010 | Richard Fahey's Anglezarke is a decent third in the EBF Lansdown Fillies' Stakes L at Bath today whilst Alan Swinbank's Merchant Of Dubai is second in the Vintage Crop Stakes L at Navan. There are local wins at Wetherby for Tim Pitt and Micky Hammond. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 24/04/2010 | Despite Punchestown and Epsom it's been a fairly quiet week again from the Yorkshire perspective, let's hope the season hots up soon. Still, the lesser winners continue to flow and today saw victories at Leicester for Richard Fahey, Kevin Ryan and Mark Johnston whilst Malcolm Jefferson had a double at Market Rasen. Closer to home the locals had a poor start at Ripon but there were later winners for Alan Swinbank and Alan Brown. Evening racing sees wins at Wolverhampton for David Nicholls and Mick Easterby and for Geoff Oldroyd at Haydock. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 16/04/2010 | No joy in any of the big races today, the good form at local tracks continued however with wins at Thirsk for Kevin Ryan (a double), Bryan Smart, Alan Swinbank, Declan Carrol and Mel Brittain. Evening racing at Doncaster saw winners for Brian Ellison and David Nicholls. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 15/04/2010 | Hardly any Yorkshire runners at Newmarket today meant that the respective third and fourth places for David Brown's Doncaster Rover and David Nicholls' Evens And Odds in the Abernant Stakes L was a fairly good showing. For the second day running the Tyke handlers won every race at their local meeting, this time the venue was Ripon and the winning trainers were Tim Easterby, Geoff Oldroyd, Tom Tate (a double), Mark Johnston, Alan Swinbank and Bryan Smart. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 14/04/2010 | Not a brilliant start to the Craven Meeting at Newmarket for the Yorkshire runners in either the £250,000 Tattersalls Timeform Trophy or the Nell Gwyn Stakes, however David Barron's 40-1 outsider Fighter Boy was a good second in the Feilden Stakes L, with Mark Johnston's Marie de Medici only a head back in third. Closer to home the locals won every race at Beverley courtesy of Tim Easterby, Ian McInnes, Richard Fahey, David Brown, John Quinn, Tom Tate, Kevin Ryan and Mark Johnston. Evening racing at Kempton saw a winner for Paul Kirby. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 10/04/2010 | No luck in the Grand National Gd3 although both Yorkshire runners jumped around safely ; John Quinn's Character Building finishing seventh and Paul Murphy's Cerium (fifth last year) in eleventh. It's been a poor National meeting all around for the Yorkshire runners but there was some small respite today in the £25,048 John Smith's Handicap Hurdle (Conditional & Amateurs) with Malcolm Jefferson's Issaquah finishing second and John Quinn's Leslingtaylor third. Evening racing at Wolverhampton sees winners for Ruth Carr, Nigel Tinkler and Richard Fahey, the later is currently in rampant form with four winners yesterday at Musselburgh. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 07/04/2010 | Richard Fahey's Halla San picked up black type today when third in the Further Flight Stakes L at Nottingham, where there were also winners for Kevin Ryan and John Weymes. On home territory there were winners at Catterick for Ollie Pears, Richard Fahey, David Nicholls (a double) and Paul Midgley. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 03/04/2010 | You can tell the flat turf season has started because there's hardly any flat turf racing, and certainly non today, go figure. Sue Smith picked up a valuable win at Carlisle today when Himalayan landed the £16,262 totescoop6 Handicap Chase, whilst reliable stablemate Mister McGoldrick followed up his Cheltenham fourth with third place in Haydock's £31,310 Betfred Daffodil Vase Handicap Chase, Malcolm Jefferson having a winner later on the card. What flat racing there was occured on Kempton's all-weather where Mark Johnston had a winner. Roll on the Craven meeting. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 27/03/2010 | The three Yorkshire raiders flopped badly in Dubai today (although Kevin Ryan's Benbaun still picked up a useful £24,691 for sixth place in the Dubai Golden Shaheen G1), but otherwise it was a good opening day to the flat season at Doncaster with Richard Fahey landing the opening £31,155 William Hill Spring Mile with new recruit Irish Heartbeat. The next was the Cammidge Trophy L and this fell to David Nicholls' Inxile (ridden by Irish Hearthbeat's jockey Paul Hanagan) with David Brown's Fitz Flyer a promising looking third. The big race of the day was the £77,888 Lincoln Handicap which fell to Newmarket based (but Yorkshire 'bred' !) William Haggas with Penitent although Richard Fahey's bottom weight Prime Exhibit picked up £23,325 for second place. John Quinn and Tim Easterby landed the last two races at Town Moor whilst the Fahey/Hanagan combination picked up two more races (including The Brocklesby) to make it four wins for Hanagan and three for Fahey. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 20/03/2010 | Quite a good day at Lingfield today for the Yorkshire trainers, slightly less good for a certain K.Fallon ! In the Sportingbest Supports Heros Spring Cup L Mark Johnston's Greyfriarschorista put up a good display to be second, and the same placing was filled by Tom Tate's Suits Me in the Winter Derby G3, the next race. Kevin Ryan's Arganil won the Hever Sprint Stakes L, with David Barron's Jaconet back in third, Johnston won the last. Harry Hogarth provided the days sole NH winner at Newcastle, whilst Mark Johnston's Saint-Cloud raider could only finish fourth in her listed race. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 19/03/2010 | No luck for the Yorkshire runners at Cheltenham today on Nigel Twiston-Davies benefit day. Mark Johnston has a winner at Lingfield and Mick Easterby and Richard Fahey at Wolverhampton. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 18/03/2010 | No Cheltenham winners today although Ferdy Murphy's Galant Nuit was third in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase and Sue Smith's Mister McGoldrick fourth in the Byrne Group Plate. Winners at Hexham for Malcolm Jefferson and Paul Kirby. On the flat David Nicholls, Bryan Smart, Alan Swinbank and Brian Ellison were amongst the winners at Southwell. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 17/03/2010 | No joy at Cheltenham yesterday, but better today with Ferdy Murphy's Poker de Sivola landing the £45,015 National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup under Katie Walsh, whilst Murphy's stable star Kalahari King was third in the Queen Mother Champion Chase Gd1 , presumably Murphy would have preferred these results the other way around ! Tim Pitt had a winner at Huntingdon whilst there were Yorkshire winners at Southwell for Brian Ellison, Richard Fahey and David Nicholls. Mark Johnston had a winner at Kempton's evening meeting where his Record Breaker was a good second in the Digibet Dragonfly Stakes L. Yorkshire racing stalwart Simon Scrope died last week at the age of 75. Scrope, of Danby Hall, hailed from a prominent Catholic family and was a director at Pontefract as well as a member of York's Committee until 2004. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 13/03/2010 | Dull. No joy in any of the traditional pre-Cheltenham races at Sandown. Ferdy Murphy will be glad to have a pre-festival winner with Seize landing the penultimate race up at Ayr. On Wolverhampton's all-weather there are winners for Kevin Ryan and David Barron whilst Mark Johnston's Lovelace is third in the Lady Wulfruna Stakes L and Richard Fahey's Albaqaa fills the same position in the Lincoln Trial Handicap. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 06/03/2010 | A quiet day in the run-in to Cheltenham but Ferdy Murphy has a useful across-the-card double with De Boitron landing the £16,262 Sportingbet.com Handicap Chase at Doncaster (where earlier John Quinn had a winner) and Bedlam Boy taking the £13,010 Cyril Alexander Memorial HBLB Novices' Chase at Kelso. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 27/02/2010 | Yorkshire runners dominate at Lingfield today ; following a good start when Mark Johnston lands the opener it's a Yorkshire 1-2 in the betdaq.co.uk Cleves Stakes L with David Barron's Jaconet coming home in front of Kevin Ryan's Green Manalishi, the next is the Winter Derby Trial Stakes L in which Tom Tate's Suits Me is a good second. Over jumps the best Yorkshire performance of the day comes from Brian Ellison's Ultimate who is third in the Racingpost.com Adonis Juvenile Novices' Hurdle Gd2 at Kempton. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 25/02/2010 | Better at Meydan today with Mark Johnston's Bikini Babe a good second in the UAE Oaks L, picking up £30,386 for her efforts. Domestically there are winners at Southwell for Ruth Carr, David Nicholls, Declan Carroll and Brian Ellison and at Kempton's evening meet for Ian McInnes. Young Ben Haslam had his first flat runner today at Southwell, having taken over from his father Patrick, unfortunately Alphacino was a distance last. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 20/02/2010 | Dull, dull, dull ; just the one winner today with Kevin Ryan's Le Toreador landing the last at Lingfield. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 18/02/2010 | No luck at Meydan today, although Tom Tate's Balcarce Now was a decent third in the last race in Dubai. On home ground there were winners at Southwell for Kevin Ryan, David Barron, Richard Fahey and Sally Hall, the later also having won the bumper at Catterick on Monday ;a very good few days for the Middleham handler who only has two or three horses, mostly home bred and owned. Richard Fahey doubled up by taking the last on Kempton's evening card. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 13/02/2010 | The Yorkshire highlights today actually came all the way down at Cagnes-Sur-Mer where James Bethell has a double including Arlequin in the £11,947 Prix des Ancolies. Closer to home Kevin Ryan had a winner at Lingfield, whilst Sue Smith and Alan Swinbank flew the (White Rose) flag at Ayr, whilst Denman threw McCoy at Newbury. Evening racing at Wolverhampton sees both Bethell and Ryan with additional winners. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 06/02/2010 | The trips to the Redcar seaside have obviously worked wonders for the team of Ferdy Murphy with Kalahari King a comfortable top-weight winner of the £43,471 Blue Square Handicap Chase at Doncaster this afternoon, stable companion I'm Delilah having earlier finished second, beaten only a nose, in the Blue Square Lightning Novices' Chase Gd2. Mick Easterby won the last at Wetherby on what was a relatively poor day for the locals. Meanwhile on Lingfield's all-weather there are wins for Bryan Smart and Mark Johnston, the later currently leading the 'phanton' all-weather trainers championship, one of his primary jockeys, Joe Fanning, is also leading the jockeys equivalent. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 30/01/2010 | No Yorkshire winners at all today, although the situation wasn't aided by the meeting at Doncaster, one of their main jump fixtures of the season, being abandoned due to frost. The only bright spot today was Sue Smith's ever-dependable Mister McGoldrick finishing third in the Betfair Trophy Handicap Chase Gd3 at Cheltenham. In other news the substantial part of the Low House Stud on the Garrowby Estate is available to rent via Savills, with £1,300 pcm giving you a 3 bed cottage, 11 boxes and 37 acres made up of 7 paddocks. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 23/01/2010 | A flurry of pre-Cheltenham races today, but not that many Yorkshire runners in them and only Malcolm Jefferson's According To Pete made any sort of impression when third in the Peter Marsh Handicap Chase Gd2 at Haydock, albeit fourteen lengths behind the runner-up. At Lingfield the Johnston/Fanning team won the first and last races whilst more exotically David Nicholls' Lost Soldier Three won the claimer at Cagnes-Sur-Mer. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 16/01/2010 | A further announcement of the pending retirement of another stalwart of the Yorkshire training ranks with the news that Peter Beaumont is to retire at the end of the month and hand over his stables at Brandsby to his current assistant Patrick Holmes. Beaumont is best known as the trainer of the fantastic Jodami who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1993 (he was second the following year) as well as three Hennessy's and two Peter Marsh's. Beaumont also trained such good horses as Young Kenny, Bobby Grant, Hunters Tweed, Hussards Collonges and Niki Dee. On the track there was a double for Mick Easterby at Lingfield where Mark Johnston also had a winner. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 14/01/2010 | Leading Middleham trainer Patrick Haslam today announced his retirement ; he will had over Castle Stables to son Ben from February. Haslam trained Kinnaird to land the Prix de l'Opera G1 in 2005 and his other major performers since being based in Middleham include Pipe Major, Maroussies Wings, Progression, China Castle, You're Special, King Revo and Choose Your Moment. The weather must be getting better as all three all-weather meetings happen today with a winner at Lingfield for Kevin Ryan and a double for Paul Midgley at Southwell where there also winner for Brian Ellison and Bryan Smart. Evening racing at Wolverhampton sees wins for Geoff Oldroyd and Alan Brown. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 13/01/2010 | The 'innovative' bumper only card at Southwell today with plenty of representation from the Yorkshire jumping trainers, although somewhat amusingly the sole Yorkshire winner comes from the predominately flat yard of Kevin Ryan who, as if to prove the point, also has a winner on Kempton's flat card. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 09/01/2010 | Guy Reed's homebred Tiddliwinks made it two wins within a week when landing the gamble at Kempton this afternoon for trainer Kevin Ryan and five pound claiming daughter Amy. Mark Johnston had a winner at Lingfield, although Mick Easterby's Atlantic Story actually picked up more prize money for being second a couple of races later. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 08/01/2010 | It may be tricky even getting a run at the moment but some people are making hay ; following Declan Carroll's double at Southwell yesterday today Bryan Smart chalked up a three timer at the same venue, with a further Yorkshire winner coming from Brian Ellison. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 01/01/2010 | Sue Smith's old timer Mister McGoldrick becomes the first Yorkshire trained black type performer of the year when a good third in the victorchandler.com Handicap Chase Gd3 at Chelteham this afternoon. All-weather racing at Southwell sees winners for Brian Ellison (a double), Ollie Pears and Mark Johnston. |
